Norman Smallwood, age 76, of Bristol, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

 

Norman was born July 21, 1941 in Bristol, VA a son of the late George W. and India Hodgson Smallwood.  Norman was a Veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, where he’d worked as an Environmental Engineer.  Norman was a longtime employee of Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, from which he retired.  He was a very active member of North Bristol Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon and choir member. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

 

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rita Wagner Smallwood; daughter, Rachel Dawn and husband Chuck; son, Derek Smallwood; granddaughter, Malachi Dawn; sister, Phyllis Arwood and husband Lee Roy; brother, James Smallwood and wife Audrey; nieces, Sarah Crabtree, Lori Johnson; nephews, Jason Arwood, Phillip Smallwood, Andy Smallwood; great nephews, Luke Johnson and Levi Johnson; special aunts, Polly Kestner and Helen Hodgson.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Smallwood will be held 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Travis Ingle officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral service. The committal service with Military Honors conducted by Highlands Honor Guard will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Glenwood Cemetery with Pastor Chuck Dawn and Rev. Alan Moor officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Farmer, Eddie Necessary, Gary Johnson and the Men of North Bristol Baptist Church. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Shao and the nurses at the Cancer Center located on Island Road and also the nurses at BRMC, with special thanks to Angela, and Dr. Marshall for their loving care and support.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Norman’s memory, may be made to North Bristol Baptist Church, 46 Church Street, Bristol, VA 24201.
