Mary Lou Carter Smith was born June 4, 1936, the daughter of Robert Todd and Estelle Pippin Carter and passed away on November 25, 2021 at the Ballad Hospice House.
Mary Lou graduated from Virginia Intermont College and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from East Tennessee State University. She was on the Physical Education faculty at Virginia Intermont for 57 years, teaching hundreds to swim during her career. She volunteered for 60 years with the American Red Cross serving as a lifetime board member and chairman for four years.
She was the first female on the board of The Bank of Marion. She was an avid reader, accomplished bridge player and competitive tennis player. Mary Lou was a member of Gardner’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and also attended Central Christian Church.
After the closure of Virginia Intermont, she worked tirelessly for 22 months writing the book, “Virginia Intermont College, One Hundred Thirty Years.”
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Edward Smith; her son, Layton Todd Smith and his wife Candy; grandchildren, Tanner and Riley. She is also survived by sisters, Betty Sue Schaughency, Sara Odum and Estelle (Cookie) Johnson.
The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Josh Johnson and Minister Mark Overton officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow the service, in Smith Family Cemetery, 536 Scott Lane, Blountville, TN. Pallbearers will be Charlie Pippin, Dr. Brett Odum, Dr. Frank Johnson, Tripp Johnson, Bill Best and Tanner Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Red Cross, Empire Chapter, 14298 Lee Hwy, Bristol, VA 24202 or the charity of your choice.
