After many years of pain, suffering and confinement, Gary Wayne Poe, 56, of Bristol, Va., took his first stroll on Heaven’s shore, March 30, 2021. He fought to live, and then he fought to die so that he could truly live. We rejoice for him, that he is free of suffering, as our hearts break for our loss. Gary was born April 1, 1965 in Bristol, Va., a son of the late Robert and Ruby McCracken Poe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Randy and Greg Poe; granddaughter, Kaylee Morgan Poe; and two unborn children.

Gary is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sarah Whicker Poe; sons, Shane Poe and wife Hannah of Glade Spring, Va., Preston Poe and wife Lora Beth of Blountville, Tenn., Jordan, Zach, Graydan, Micah and Kyler Poe of the home; daughters, Caitlin Arenal and husband Austin of Trinity, FL, Carrissa Poe of Bristol, Adanna and Laikin Poe of the home; grandchildren, Jase, Natalee and Addalynn; brothers, Jimmy and wife Karen, Darrell, and Bobby Poe; and sister, Debbie Grogan and husband Ronnie.

We would like to thank those who cared for him through the years, Amedisys Home Health, Bristol Health South and NHC second floor in the early years. The entire staff of NHC, especially Heather and Jamie, the third floor staff that cared for him these last few years, Dr. Schrenker, and the Caris staff, early caregivers, Tommi Jo and Mercedes, and the last few months, Amanda and Lynn, and those who were caregivers in our home, Uradell Clayton and especially Amanda Lank. Thank you to our family, friends, church family, and anyone who has prayed for him and our family through the years. A big thank you to Jessie Parks, his roommate and friend at NHC.

The funeral service will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Revival Center Church with Pastor Lyons Smith officiating. Radio frequency, for those who need to remain in the car 106.1 FM. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. In accordance with the Virginia mandate, masks will be required. The interment will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2021 at Sproles Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eric Fritts, Jennings Whicker, Brian Barker, Andrew Samuel, Steve Warner and Wayne Stout. Honorary pallbearers will be the young men and their dads of the original Boy Scout Troop 108.

In lieu of flowers, those who would prefer may make contributions toward funeral expenses.
