Alice Lee Sproles, 91, of New Castle, formerly of Bristol, Virginia, passed away peacefully on the evening of Friday, November 10, 2017 at Hickory Creek of New Castle.
She was born May 26, 1926 in Aberdeen, Washington, a daughter of the late Cline F. and Maude (Barker) Dixon.
Alice was a 1943 graduate of Hamilton High School in Mendota, Virginia. On June 2, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Walter Thomas Sproles, and together they enjoyed 72 years of marriage. W.T. or “Dub” as she called him, faithfully and tenderly cared for her during her 17-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
A homemaker, Alice enjoyed keeping her home perfectly clean and organized. She was a devoted mother to her only child, “Tommy Lee,” and cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Alice had a heart to help others and was always generous to those in need. She especially enjoyed playing the piano and for most of her life attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Bristol, Tennessee.
Those left to hold Alice’s memory dear include her loving husband, Walter “W.T.” Sproles; son, Thomas Lee (wife: Paula) Sproles of New Castle; four grandchildren, Connie Lee (husband: Jeff) Richwine of Anderson, Thomas David (wife: Mary Beth) Sproles, Leah Paulette DeArmond, and John Mark (wife: Julie) Sproles, all of New Castle; 12 great-grandchildren, Sarah Beth (husband: David) Sanford of Penns Creek, PA, Lauren Michele (husband: Jordan) Dodrill of Ingalls, Hannah Marie Sproles of New Castle, Emily Brooke Shults of Anderson, Mark Evan Sproles of New Castle, Ashley Caroline Shults of Anderson, Ethan Andrew DeArmond, Katelyn Nicole Sproles, Daniel Thomas Sproles, Caleb Wayne DeArmond, Brooklyn Michelle Sproles and Brayden Isaiah Sproles all of New Castle; a sister, Ruth Rice of Mendota, VA and her nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, Dr. Steve (wife: Pat) Dixon, Barbara Carrier, Mary Swiney, Sandy Rice, Patsy (husband: Bill) Carrier, Judi (husband: Kevin) Houser, Dr. Bruce (wife: Odessa) Baker, Deborah Baker, Gwyneth Baker Trost, Angela (husband: W.A.) Curtis, Lynn Loftin, Rhonda Lunn, Susan (husband: Landon) Bellamy, and David Blalock and many great-nieces and great-nephews whom she loved.
Alice was preceded in death by her brother, William “Bill” Dixon; three sisters, Betty Blalock, Erma Bowery, and Imogene Baker; two nephews, Randy Dixon and Warner Rice.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, November 16, 2017 at Sproles Family Funeral Home with Rev. Denny Neal and Rev. Rollin Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
