Gus Nickels Johnson, age 94, of Blountville, Tenn., passed away peacefully in his favorite recliner on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at his home.
He was born February 24, 1924 in Scott County, Va., son of the late Charles Carter Johnson and Rosie Maxie Thompson Johnson. He was of the Methodist faith. Gus was a World War II Army Veteran and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ada Cole, Thelma Johnson, Gladys Rudd, Susie Webb and Opal Busuttil; and brothers, Tom, Ed, Dexter and Charles Jr.
Gus is survived by his wife of 26 years, Wanda Pierce Childress Johnson; son, Gary Wayne Johnson and wife Rita of Lynn Haven, FL; granddaughter, Mary-Francis Maxie; grandson, Doug Johnson; sisters, Juanita Carpenter of Kingsport, Tenn, and Faye Collier of Chesterfield, Va; and brother, Grady Johnson of Mechanicsville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held 8 p.m. Thursday, November 8, 2018 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Edgar Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the service. The interment will be held 10 a.m. Friday, November 9, 2018 at Mountain View Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the DAV Chapter 40 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be ETSU Family Physicians.
